There is no evidence to suggest that taking any enzyme supplements will improve your digestion or constipation. Enzyme supplements are only of benefit in specific clinical conditions e.g. chronic pancreatitis with pancreatic insufficiciancy. If you are worried consult a real doctor, and do not waste your money on crackpot health advice found on the internet!
The best way to improve your constipation would be to alter your diet and increasing the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables, and take plenty of fluids. If your bowel habit has changed you should consult a gastroenterologist for investigation to ensure you do not have a pathological condition such as colon cancer,
You should also learn to spell.

Doctor: since we're in a critical mood, your grammar could use some improvement. Here's how it should read: "The best way to improve your constipation would be to alter your diet and increase the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables, and take plenty of fluids." Guess nobody's perfect ....

Hi, Doc.

I believed what you believe for the first 15 years of my practice too. Eventually, you will change your mind in this area as well. How about your trotting out all those research articles showing that all digestive enzymes (except those you mentioned as being exempted) are placebos.

Remember, only double blind studies have a positive placebo effect of about 30-35%. IF both the doc and the patient know what is being given, and they both believe that it will work, the positive placebo effect is more than 70%. See Brain Mind Bulletin.

Now I have given you a good opening to say that this is the only way that those other enzymes work. However, the sword cuts both ways. This also explains why ANY allopathic approach works. If you have trouble with that, look at Dr Claude Beck's placebo open heart surgery in the '50s. I scrubbed with him.

Without research to back you up, you really need to start any entry with "In my opinion." Listen to "english major".

The Attitude Czar position is already taken.

Are you bucking for Grammar Czar? If so, I won't battle you for it. Life is just too short (for me, at least) to be constantly aware of other people's Grammar transgressions and pointing them out, not to mention the challenge of offering them the "correct" grammar.

This problem is especially acute since we have visitors here from all over the world, and other places' grammar may be different from what we practice in this particular part of the good 'ole US of A.

Plus some folks here have English as a second or third language. I'd hate to take them on, grammar-wise.

As I said, if you want the Grammar Czar spot, GO FOR IT!

Hi, D.

This is best determined on an individual basis by a professional on the spot. However, you need to know that an MD is likely the most poorly trained professional in this area.

A nutritionally oriented Chiropractor ar a good Naturopath would do you the best.

From My viewpoint reversing the LGS that almost always causes the problems, for which you are considering supplementation, is BY FAR the most effective way to do this.

See my response to Dr Supwards. I welcome his comments and look forward to seeing his research articles. However, I have found that, empirically, supplemental oral digestive enzymes DO work for many people.

See the Glossary for any unfamiliar terms (and how to find those practitioners close to you) and THEN, if you still have questions, write again.

Hey, while we're at it, 'insufficiency' was also incorrectly spelled in Dr. Supward's message. As to 'wasting money', this website is FREE (what a deal!!!). The real point is, Dr. Supward's was a rude message and the bigger point is, the information on this site is used at the discretion of the reader - we make up our own minds about our own state of health. Accurate, current and empathetic health information from Dr. Walt Stoll with additional advice from Bob McFerran, RHJ (ACz alias?), Att. Czar (RHJ alias?) and others, are the big reason people return to this site on a regular basis. It's a RESOURCE, and a very good one!!!!! Thx. for providing it!

YOU should learn how to spell, yourself. "Insufficiciancy" is not the correct spelling, Dr. Perfect.

Mega-Zyme by Enzymatic Therapy is an excellent digestive enzyme supplement. It is expensive, but it sure worked for me. I was having some awful indigestion, bloating, burping, etc. I took 2 tablets before each meal, and the problem cleared up within a day or two. Skilled relaxation has been helping, too! I don't know if they're good for constipation, but they are a great enzyme supplement.

I don't think a licensed "medical" doctor has a place on this BB judging from the BAD advice given by "Dr." Supwards.
If you want to talk aboput ripoffs, lets talk about the TONS
of bad diagnosis's given by the so called "medical professionals" EVERY DAY! They seem to have a knack for leading us all astray chasing some wild goose that winds up milking our insurance company on some whim.

I was with a company that sold digestive enzymes and they worked WONDERS for my family's digestion EVERY TIME WE USED THEM! They are wonderdful and should be used especially by those that have digestive problems.

Dr. Stoll is right. The good "Dr." Supwards needs to change his "opinion".

Another tool for constipation

I have a friend who calls herself the "Queen of Fiber" (although she is not on a wholefoods diet). Her chiro suggested that she sit on one of those vibrators that go on a chair (which can be bought at Target/Kmart etc.) She's been doing that consistently and finds that she's going consitently. She did have a sense that her bowels weren't working--peristaltic action or whatever. What is interesting is that at a certain time of the monthly cycle, this doesn't work. I'd better never mention her name here or she'll have my head! :)
