Walt - You always say "Let us know how you do"

So, for the umpteenth time I am letting you know. You may remember I posted about my partners pain in his left leg and how the doc told him, after seeing the Xrays, that he will need a hip replacement within say 2 years. Well, since then he has been back to the consultant rheumatologist. What a surprise!

He was good. He sat there and listened to us saying how the GP had looked at the Xrays and said there is some degeneration of the hip and you are likely to need a hip replacement within 2 years.

He had a slight smile on his face and I remember thinking, what's up with him? Anyway, after we had finished spouting off about what he needs in the way of an op, the consultant sat back and said --

You may have some degeneration of the hip, lots of people do, especially if you have done a lot of sports activity. However, this does not mean that that is the source of your pain. He told my partner to walk up and down. He then got him on the bed thing and told him to move his leg etc. Then we sat down again and he said, my diagnosis has not changed since I last saw you. The pain is coming from your back!

He then said, I accept that you probably have some hip degeneration. That is not what this is all about. You do not need a hip replacement and I would guess that you may never need a hip replacement. What is causing your pain is your back. He also said a hip replacement condition needs a clinical diagnosis which you have not had - except from your GP who only looked at your Xrays.

He told him that rest does not help this condition and he should do brisk walking daily. Also, get himself a good comfortable upright chair, do not slouch on the sofa. I then piped up and said I have asked him to consider going to an osteopath/acupuncturist that I know of who is very good and cured my mother of trigeminal neuralgia some years ago. He then replied, spot on! He turned to my partner and said you can do a lot worse then her if she is the one trying to look after you. He looked at me with a grim face" LOL!

Anyway, he saw the osteopath/acupuncture guy two times and since then he has had no pain at all.

Apparently, the osteopath/acupuncture fellow told him he was also of the opinion that he did not need a hip replacement. He has good mobility. He also said something about the needles he put in. Apparently, he can tell when he puts the needles in what is right and what is wrong. If a needle doesnt "move" in the right way there is something wrong. Only one needle out of the eight he put in did not move, so he has told him what excercise he has to do to put that right.

The osteopath/acupuncture guy has said he does not need to see him again (a good guy since we were paying out of our own pockets for this - not covered on BUPA) and he said to come back if he needed to, but he didnt think he would.

Oh well, all of this has turned out well. However, this just goes to show that if you listen to your GP (General Practitioner) who has only looked at a couple of Xrays, you can jump to so many conclusions. Not our fault, we followed what he said.

Thanks God for the consultant, who obviously knows what he is talking about.

Thank you Walt for your previous input. It turned out to be spot on.

Panic over!

Regards to all who posted to help.

Ye Gods Maz! That is slamming news. The only part I don't get is why the grim faces from your partner. You sure he wants to be with you?

OK, nevermind, answer in email. I have some good news of my own on that front.

You GO girl!

Thanks, Maz.

The system CAN work. It is a shame that there are so few docs like this. Hang onto this one. He sounds like a gem.
