Those who claim health; why do you visit? Honest Question

Posted by Michele [20.1774] on October 25, 2005 at 07:43:51:

This is an honest question, not meant to be abrasive, though I need to state that to preface those with chips on shoulders and defensive coping skills.

I am curious as to folks who claim that they feel great, are great, great relationships and so on ...why they frequent (not "visit" once in a while, but frequent almost daily, some several times a day) the board?

Here are reasons I felt it could be:
1. To help others (although I'd be interested if these folks volunteer at home in "real" life also)
2. Are not really healthy but want to appear healthy, and looking up items and hop in on links when applicable.
3. Have a sense of community after being on the board a bit.
4. See the board as a hobby.
5. Use the board as a social time you can shut on/off.
6. You don't know why really - it became a habit and you continue.
7. You feel alone and this board makes you feel not alone.
8. You are marketing something.(make-up, etc)

I myself, feel a sense of community - the board has helped me out in the past - and also has NOT helped me - but I choose to keep that sense of community going. Partially, it's a habit.

Hi Michele:

There is so much to learn about health on this board. I frequent it for my particular health needs as well as my friends and family's health. There are several people around me with diabetes (some newly diagnosed). I find ANN's advice on diabetes helpful. Ron had submitted a few helpful links on the subject as well. One friend died from asthma complications last spring. Wish I knew more about asthma before she died.

Then there is the Codex issue and the FDA and the whole business of politics intertwined with pharmaceuticals. Anyone interested in health, healthy foods and supplements needs to know what is going on with our government and how the government's laws can affect us. This board provides such information.

Sure, the friendly banter between board members is amusing and some members are pure entertainment, but the main attraction is the wealth of information that's available here. The fun is simply an added bonus:-)

thanks, PL. I appreciate your keeping us informed on CODEX and organics, and, of course, I loved your advice to the guy with the MRI who had metal in his nose. BTW, I miss your bathroom posts- those were always enjoyable. I found out during my first pregnancy, when it took me three busses to get anywhere in the city, how convenient fast food places were to tinkle (they were close to every bus stop and the kid seemed to keep his head on my bladder or something), so we still stop at fast food places to tinkle when we are on trips. McDonalds has these toilets that flush as soon as the stream of urine stops, while you are still wiping yourself and haven't thrown the paper in yet. Heaven forbid you drop anything in the toilet- it'll be gone. Somehow, I prefer to flush the toilet myself at a point in time of my own choosing. If they must do it for you (and I do understand why that might be desirable), you'd think they could have it flush when you open the stall door (as DR Schultze says some european pay toilets do).

oy, SILs breast cancer;kids' diabetes;type O family members' wheat'gluten problems;friend's asthma; finding out about Tamiflu in a post today. Hoping someone shows up on this board someday who can actually answer some of my questions.
There is alway something to learn. Years ago, I wondered why my husband was so much less healthy than I am. He would eat all this great whole grain food I made him, including the lunch I sent to work; I would rush around all day, grabbing a handful of peanuts here, a swig of soymilk there-obviously not a balanced diet. When I learned about the blood type diet, it suddenly made sense- peanuts are beneficial for type A's (me). Wheat is bad for type O's (him) and I was making him whole wheat pasta a lot and baking him whole wheat bread. He ate peanuts, cashews, and pistachios- all bad for type O-we've since switched him to walnuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and tahini and stopped feeding him wheat.
I've learned about the problems of low choslesterol and added butter to our otherwise vegan diet. Have re-thought lowfat. Have rethought veggie oils. My mom was a really bright RN who followed the best health advice of her time- turned me on to cold pressed safflower oil. She loved fish, but severely limited it, because of the health advice 20-30 years ago. Most of what she did was wrong, in hindsight, and I'm open to that idea- there's still stuff to learn and science evolves-medicine has done SO many about faces, though not nearly soon enough and we'll hear about problems sooner here than we will in the newspaper.

Hi ANN:

Yeah, well the guy with the metal in his nose never did come back to tell us what these things turned out to be. But, I have to say that public bathrooms are my pet peeve. Sadly, I am forced to use one every day at work (big building). Lots of strangeness goes on in these public bathrooms.

And what's with all the space showing under the stall doors? I know it must be to see if the stall is occupied, but I don't like sitting there and feeling like I'm on display. I always wondered what they'd think if I had only one leg showing. They'd look to see if my stall was occupied and they'd see only one leg...right there in the middle...yep, right there in the middle, not to the right or left. Once I saw feet facing the wrong way in the ladies' room. The shoes were feminine and delicate, but what was "she" doing standing facing the wrong way? As perplexed as I was at the time, I didn't stick around to find out.

By the way, what would one do if a bracelet or something valuable got flushed down one of these automatic toilets? It's not like you can ask to go back there and look for it yourself.

I know I've posted twice already on this subj., but while I was jumping on my "rebounder" a few minutes ago, I got to pondering your post further.

Those who claim to have music skills, why do they continue to study music? Those who claim to know how to do surgery, why do they attend seminars for further education? Those who claim to know how to style hair, why do they pick up this month's issue of "Hairstyles"? and so on and so forth... I think the answer to this question is that people desire to continue learning. Wouldn't it be kind of pretentious for one to say that since they know everything about what it is they're doing, there is no need to learn anything else about it? How do you cook up these questions, Michele, and then "pre-accuse people who "may" take offense of having defensive coping skills or having chips on their shoulders. That in itself is a very manipulative gesture. I, for one, started to not even post anything about because the "pre-label". But then I thought, no no, letting someone prevent me of posting an indifference to their post is indeed letting someone manipulate me and in no way indicates that I have a chip on my shoulder OR defensive coping skills.

I don't know you personally and I mentioned the words manipulative and pretentious but that does not mean that you are either. It only means that your actual post on this actual day "seems to me" to be rather pretentious and manipulative.

Just my take on it :)

the spaces are for crawling under if the lock gets stuck. When a bathroo is out of order in a public place, a small employee is sent to lock it from inside before putting the out of order sign on it.

Perfect Steve.
I am so proud of you all.

My husband was dying of cancer and I would absolutely 100% for sure not be alive if it were not for Dr. Walt Stoll and all of the wonderfully fabulous, kind, loving people here that I am growing to love more and more day by day.

The humor has developed fabulously..........so fun.

The purpose as I understand it Michele from Dr. Stoll's vision is for his team to help the weak and to educate them just like a classroom.

I know I read somewhere in 6 years of coming here that at an office where he was physically years ago Walt had a team of specialists helping him.

That exists right here on this Bulletin Board. There a chiropractors, doctors, nurses, relflexologist, massage therapist, pain specialist. Dr. Stoll one on one himself.

The man is a hero. Where else in this world can you some on line to find such loving people so willing to get a person well and Steve said it perfectly....

When someone helps you it is only the right thing to do to give back.

In my life, I thank God for people who are well and strong. They open doors for me, cut my food, help me stand up from a sitting postion. I have a team of professionals surrounding me who are in good shape to help. My hands are so deformed I drop most things from them onto the floor and have to wait days for someone to come along flexible enough to reach the floor.

I was just so thankful today even because something wonderful happened again for us.

It is pouring down rain and our van needs a new head gasket and our friend is outside fixing it and then my pharamacist hand=carried from another town my script. It almost made me cry how good people are who are well.

Like everyone here said this is a place, a classroom of learning and laughter for positive people to reach out and care.

Love to you all
Lovebird

ANN:

How many people can crawl under those bathroom doors? Some wouldn't manage very well, especially the elderly, the overweight, and the handicapped. Most locks I've seen consist of a small metal sliding bar that you slide back and forth to lock and unlock. With such a foolproof lock, I say lower the doors!

We don't have any small maintenance men in our building that could lock a stall from the inside, so they just tape a sign on the door. One guy looks like a leprechaun with muscles...don't think he'd fit under, but maybe he could climb over.

What needed to be said? She needed to dare people to post anything negative about a question with an obvious answer? Sorry, Dr. Stoll, but I think her post was quite arrogant especially in pre-judging people about having chips on shoulders and defensive coping skills. Had she just simply asked people why they liked to frequent the board, instead of insulting them before we even had a chance to post, it would've been different.

But it's not really that big of a deal, I don't suppose. It's just that her post struck me as way weird. :)

I perceived her question to be posted out of curiosity, I responded to an "honest question" with an "honest answer",

I did get the impression that she felt that some people were being deceptive with their motivation in the way the subject was directed at people who "claim health"....Who that is directed at, I don't know, most of us have questions of our own to ask.

I use the board mainly because there is a wealth of information on health here. I learn at least one thing every day and am always saving interesting links and posts, I have a little library. I've learned so much I just can't believe it. As a side benefit there are some interesting OT's that come up from time to time, and some interesting people, but for me health is my overriding factor for being here.

These are but just a few of the topics that I have found helpful and interesting since being here:

various aspects of the 3-legged stool & it's power
SR
various illnesses and what they stem from
the power, meaning, and role of stress
detoxing
brain function
metabolic types
digestion
whole foods
what makes raw food addicts tick
the electromagnetic nature of our bodies
different healing modalities
the connection between body and mind
the power of the subconscious
the power of certain foods and supplements
codex
and most of all --- What Walt thinks about things

Hi Michele,

I haven't read the other responses, but one thing that I have noticed with myself and it seems to be the case with some other regular posters on this board is that most people who come here are really seeking help for their condition. Typically they have exhausted all other resources/treatments/practitioners they are aware of and have not found relief. This site offers hope and practical advice.

Now, as to why well people continue to visit, one reason is that it is a way to actually help others and help repay the assistance they have received here. I've had many people I know (in person) ask me what my secret is, why I look so healthy (although I am not entirely healthy yet), why my complexion and hair look so great, why I eat the way I do, how I lost weight, etc., etc., so I will start to tell them just a little. Usually they quickly develop a look of disbelief, get nervous or shifty, or just plain say they couldn't possibly/would never in a million years change their lifestyle that much. As Walt always says, "They haven't suffered enough.", or as I say, they don't really want to get well enough to research the connections between body/mind/spirit.

Helping people here on the board is a way to share what we've learned without that rejection or that "you're weird" reaction from someone we know and care about. If a newbie posts on the board and they don't like what they are being told, they usually move on.

for me there is a lot more to it, but that's one reason.

Or it's just too much effort for some to put in to getting healthy. They don't have the motivation. And you need motivation, time, energy AND discipline to get well.

It's no quick fix, but if more people gave it an honest attempt (not giving up), they would be surprised at the results!

Hi Bliss,

Yes, good point. I very much agree about it being too much effort for most people. Why do all that work, spend all that time, and give up so much, when you can just go to the doctor for a quick fix (antidepressant or other drugs, surgery, or something else that provides quick results and the illusion of health)? Plus, the health insurance pays for it!

I didn't read every post, but it's all so positive what I did read - great to hear.

I think this is a great bunch of folks - everyone - I mean, everyone here has been of aid or helped someone tremendously and that's really a blessing in a day and age where a lot of people just turn the other cheek and ignore.

Kudos to all. and Thanks for sharing.

Who makes a post and then "admits" they don't read all the responses?

Michele, did you lose interest in the subject or find that the consensus was pretty much the same, or did you not want to know what "everybody" thought? Just an honest question, not meant to be abrasive or anything. *WINK*

OR, did you lose interest when the posts you read weren't from people with your "predetermined" defensive coping skills or from anyone with chips on their shoulders?

Sorry, Michele, hehe, still just trying to make any sense at all out of the post about why people who claim health find it necessary to visit a health bulletin board! ????????????

" didn't read every post, but it's all so positive what I did read"

So, are you saying that if there had been any "negative" posts, those would have been the people with defensive coping skills or chips on their shoulders?

LOL

I can say for damn sure that I am a lot healthier than a lot of people I know, but I get those "weird" illnesses that we are embarassed to talk about. As for why I come here? Because I find that almost everyone around me doesn't believe in natural remedies/holistics/naturopathy, probably because they don't care and have bought so far into the medical world that they just don't know anything else. I'm so sick of people telling me that we get sick because of the sudden changes in weather and this and that and this and that....annoys the crap out of me. So I come here and feel "a sense of community" with those who know better or at least want to know. Who can see that there are some drugs on the market that actually do help us, we benefit from, but there is also a lot of $$$$$ going on and I can't stand it. So here, I feel a sense of belonging in that aspect and try to share my experiences. So that's that. I hope that helps.
