Hi All,
It's been 16 days post-op. I did fine. No cancer. I had wonderful care in the hospital. I had gone into this situation scared out of my wits because of a life-long deep distrust of allopathic medicine. I certainly have first hand experience of the top notch care in this country. I am grateful for having this experience because at some point later on in my life, I may need medical care like this again and now I will go for help and not avoid it out of fear. I had the good fortune of being directed to a couple of outstanding docs.
There were some negatives. I had an allergic/hypersensitive reaction to something, don't know what. My functional med. doc thinks it may be the anaesthesia or the antibiotics. It had been building for days and peaked on Monday night, 6 days post-op with hives. My functional medicine doc sent me to the ER the next day. It was an absolute nightmare. I learned that our ER's are being abused by all the illegals using them as a free clinic plus American citizens who have a cold, don't take care of it and then decide to go to the ER. This ER was jammed with people. I had read that the ER's are being abused but UNTIL I experienced it firsthand, I really didn't have an appreciation of just how bad it really is.
While in the hospital, I also asked for specific pain drugs because I know what works with me and what doesn't. That sent up a red flag with the nurses/docs. There were inferences made that I since I was asking for pain relief other than the Darvocet they give to every pt. (transitioning from the the heavy narcotic pain meds given IV via a PAC pump) post-op that I must have experience and therefore a history of abuse. The hospital and doctors are going to get a letter challenging their unspoken assumption. Walt, I now understand what you meant when you said it's a one-size-fits-all medical system. I sure as heck will not let that one stand unchallenged. All these records go to a depository in Maryland that insurance companies, government agencies, etc. can look at.
I have a new appreciation for your board, Walt and all that you've done to awaken us from the trance we are in. I have your book, Saving Yourself... which I have only read parts that pertained to my health. I'm now going to read the rest of the book. You certainly have a unique and valuable perspective and an accurate one on the terrible state of the health care system in America.
Best,
Mary

Hi Mary,
Hate you had to go through with all you've gone through but glad there was no cancer.
Take care,
D

Thanks, D.
I'm a bit ticked off at the first OB-Gyn I saw who basically scared the $%^* out of me. I think I could have safely waited another month before letting them do the surgery. I mostly reacted out of fear. I jumped when I should have waited and done more research. I hope I don't pay a price later on with have opted to get the total hysterectomy. I will do everything I can to heal my body. I've read that there can be structural problems later with internal organs as a result of no longer having the pelvic floor. I sure hope not. I've learned some good lessons from this experience and I'm still here :)
Kind Regards,
Mary

I know what you mean. My gyno has threatened to do a hysterectomy on me more than once. I escaped the last surgery he wanted to do on me by doing some research myself. He used the possibility of cancer to scare me but I still feel the surgery was unnecessary so I opted to forgo it and so far I think I made the right choice. But in my case it was simply that I was beginning menopause and my doctor couldn't or wouldn't agree that's what was causing my skipping periods.
As far as structural problems, I've already had a bladder tack up and I still have the majority of my organs, minus one tube which was taken during the same surgery as my bladder tack up, so it can happen without a hysterectomy.
Wishing you a quick recovery from the surgery.

Thanks, Mary, for sharing your personal experience.
There IS a place for allopathic medicine--as I have always said! It is just not appropriate for everything.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Walt.
Because of the terrible pain and suffering I went through as a child because of my mother's addiction to prescription drugs and all the hospitalizations and emergency room visits, I grew to fear and hate allopathic medicine. Believe me, I saw more as a child than most people are likely to see in a lifetime. It left a deep and lasting impression on my psyche.
So, for me to have been able to let go of this inordinate amount of fear is nothing short of miraculous. (Thank you, God!) I am grateful that I went through this and who knows, maybe it will find it's way into book.
BTW, Walt, have you seen President Jimmy Carter's new book, Our Endangered Values? I watched an interview on TV last week. It looks really good. I'm a big fan of President Carter.
