Dear Dr. Stoll,
I am writing in regards to my three year old daughter, Haley. Back in September, she had a strep throat and develop this mass in her neck after the antibiotics were done. I was so concerned because the mass got the size of a ping pong ball. I kept calling my pediatrician and she said that it was a lymph node that was swollen and it would go down. It eventually went down after a second round of Amoxicillin to the size of a pea. The site was barely noticeable. In December she had flu like symptoms and I took her in and the doctor said that she had the flu and gave her flu medicine. They strep tested her and she was negative. By Wednesday that week she was running 103.7 and above fevers and the knot came back in her neck. Her breath smelled horrible. I was not convinced that it was not strep so I took her in again. This time the doctor gave her Amoxicillin and she finished that up the Saturday after Christmas and by New Years the mass was back again. So I called the doctor AGAIN and she put her on Zithromax this time. She took 2 doses and I did not notice any difference so I started asking questions. I had been talking to some MD friends of mine at work. I am a Registered Nurse and I made it a point to talk with the Infectious Disease MD at our hospital. He recommended that I take my child to a ENT doctor in Richmond. I did what he said. He says that Haley has a thyroglossal duct cyst and he wants to remove it. We had the ultrasound done yesterday and I have no results. While I am having that done the surgery scheduler from the ENT's office calls to schedule her surgery date. I am so nervous about this!!!!!!!!!!! I don't want to have my baby put to sleep and put through this surgery unless definitely necessary...Please help.... She took 3 weeks of Augmentin prior to seeing the ENT doctor for the second time. The mass is now the size of a pea. Please let me know if this sounds correct. ..I am just scared....thanks for your time.

Hi, Becky.

In my opinion, you need a much better primary care physician.

If he was oblivioius of the diagnosis with something so obvious, how do you expect he would do with something that was the least bit complicated.

It seems to me that the only thing he knows anything about is how to write a prescription for antibiotics and not even WHEN that is appropriate.

Surgery is the only answer to this problems and every time it flares up it causes more scarring--which makes the surgery more difficult.

Let us know how she does.

Walt
