Dark spots on face

Posted by Anna on January 19, 2001 at 14:09:52:

Hi,

I had never complained about my skin until I turned 33, when that summer I came back from a beach with a nice tan. After my sun tan dissapeared, I was left with brown spots all over my face, which from then on each summer come back worse (darker)and in certain pattern making me look awfull and as if I had a moustache! (I'm a female)

Yes, I know I should stay out of the sun, and I do NOT "fry" myself as I used too - I bearly even go out during summer, and always wear sunscreen, hooded cup, etc. But they still find a way to show up and annoy me.

Since the damage has been done, my question is: Are there any effective bleaches, natural or prescription, to help with the spots? They are on my forehead, on front of my cheeks around my nose, and yes, under it....yeak! Of course right now they are not as bad. For years I tried to just ignore them, but whenever I see my own photo, I am shocked, and so are my friends and family who had not seen me for a while.
Once, I asked a lady who was selling cosmetics, what are these spots (when they were still new) and she answered: "age spots"....Since I was only in my early 30's - I did not like what I heard! (I am 40 now).

Any advise will be greatly appeciated, especially from experience.

Thanks,
Anna

A good dermotologist will be able to remove the spots and leave no scars.

I had some removed from tops of hands and there are no scars. A simple procedure.

Hi, Anna.

This is called Chloama Gravidarum (look it up in a dermatology color atlas) becaues it most commonly occurs with pregnancy. The exact hormonal imbalance that causes it is still not known but it is permanent--so far as anyone knows. If Marie's doc has a solution it will be beyond MY experience and I would like to know what it is.

The same hormonal imbalance can be produced without pregnancy and I have seen patients with it who never were pregnant--although that is rare.

The only thing I know of that will cover it up is makeup---not a very good solution. The only thing I know of that will prevent it getting worse (after a year of practice) is the disciplined use of SR.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

Thanks Marie,

Do you mean something like peel-off? Can you tell me more details? I would love to see them dissapear....

I have not seen a dermatologist yet, only asked a quick question when I took my son for something else - he said "stay out of the sun!", there are some bleaches...come and see me..."

My spots are hard to outline, they are rather shapless and are quite extensive. It's funny, because my nose and area close to it as well as the very front of my forehead is normal, light and spotless, and then...there is a brownish area further in - giving me a dirty face look, then normal again. They are not like fricles, or dark definite areas.
And yes, they look like some pregnat women get, not like typical age spots, also they occupy a large area on my face, not just one spot.

I think I will be scared to remove them surgically on my FACE. Can you please tell me more about this procedure?

Thanks,
Anna

My dermotologist used "liquid nitrogen" sprayed on back of my hand. When it healed there were no scars. One area was about dime size, two brown spots run together). Have had several places removed from arms using liquid nitrogen and there are no scars.

It may be the pigment collects uneven in your face when in the sun a lot.

A good dermotologist will know how to remove the spots without scaring. As I said before I am a coward when it comes to "photoderm", too many people have scars and left with white streaks. It is a new procedure and is in the hands of inexperienced dermotologists who "rent" the equipment and do several at a time to make fast bucks. Only doctors who own their own equipment should ever be considered for this procedure and even then there is no guarantee.

Thanks for taking time to answer my questions. I think I will wait a little until they are more visible before I see the dermatologist.
I sure will post my results for others who might benefit.
