Tinea versicolor or what???

Posted by vickir on April 30, 2001 at 10:51:33:

Namaste, Walt

I've read the postings here about tinea versicolor, but what I have doesn't seem to fit the description. I have small (biggest may be 3/16" in diameter) depigmented spots primarily on my lower arms, a few on my calves and upper arms. None (that I can see) on my trunk, neck or face. Is this tinea versicolor? If not, what is it?

Regarding tinea versicolor, I read on a dermatologist's website that one shouldn't use antibacterial soap if one has tinea versicolor. Didn't say why. I'm wondering if the reason might be that we normally beneficial bacteria living on our skin that keeps the fungi in check, sort of like in our guts. Antibacterial soap might reduce the number of friendly bacteria to the point that the fungi are able to multiply. The spots on my arms started to proliferate about 3 years ago when I switched to an antibacterial soap. What do you think, Walt?

Spottily,
Vicki R.

Hi, vickir.

I am surprised at myself for not thinking of it before but the idea that our normal skin bacteria would help prevent infestations of the tinea organism is a good one. One more factor that we can do something about!

The little white spots you are describing are not likely tinea, though. How old are you?

Namaste`

Walt

Just turned 59.
this is appears like it might be contagious--my husband (who is 47) also has spots--on his forearms and back. The spots are irregularly shaped, not perfectly round.

Hi, vickir.

Tinea Versicolor IS slightly contagious IF the person catching it doesn't have very good immunity. How long has your husband has his spots and how is he about a healthy lifestyle?

Walt

I'm not sure how long he has had spots. His forearms are very hairy, so the spots aren't noticeable unless you're looking for them. I first noticed a few small spots on his back about six months ago and then saw that he had them on his arms as well.

As for lifestyle, he does pretty well, much better than the average American. He reacts to many foods and additives (gets headaches, visual distortion, mood disorders, etc) so he eats only foods that I prepare and know what's in them. He does SR twice a day, but he doesn't exercise regularly. IMO, he has a seriously leaky gut and weak adrenals.

Walt,
My husband is 47. His mother died of breast cancer at age 65. His maternal grandmother lived into her nineties; his maternal grandfather died in his seventies. My husband's dad is now 71 and in good health. His paternal grandfather committed suicide; his grandmother lived to her eighties.

Thanks, vickir.

Pretty good genes (better than average, likely). SO this is not likely age spots.

Vitilego is a pretty good possibility. He would need to see a dermatologist to get that diagnosis.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt
