Possible TMJ?

For nearly the past two weeks I have awakened every night with a severe headache approximately 1 to 1.5 hours after going to sleep. It's always on the right side of my head. The headache is sometimes accompained with a squeezing pain in my eye, and pain that radiates to my sinus cavity, my inner ear, my neck and my glands. Tooth grinding seemed like a possibility, but I went to a walk-in clinic when my symptoms seemed more like a sinus infection. However, the doctor said it TMJ and gave me Bextra, an arthritis medication. It is ineffective.

My next thought is that it was an orthodontic problem. I am still wearing a retainer every other night. Braces were removed last year. Thought my bite was misaligned and went to the orthodontist yesterday. The response was no, and that grinding was the likely culprit. My retainer will be fixed with a guard.

Despite this, I have to wonder if this is the true problem. I've had pain that is difficult to describe. It feels very deep within my jaw and joint. I can open my mouth fine, but there is a constant, deep ache that occurs only at night and only on my right side. I've taken some prescription codeine that I've had for headaches a while back and it's not working.

Just wondering if others might have similar symptoms--headaches on one side, only at night, and just after being asleep for a short time. Are there any OTC medications that are effective for you? Tylenol doesn't seem to help. Read that 'belladonna' works, but I don't know what that is.

Hi Leigh:

When I get those types of headaches, my chiropractor will adjust my jaw bone. She knows what has to be done. I can't explain medically exactly what she does, except to say that she manipulates the right bones.

For the muscle spasms that accompany those headaches, I take the herb Valerian right before bed. It acts as a sort of mild muscle relaxer. Hope this helps:-)

Hi, Leigh.

Certainly sounds like it to me. What have you learned from the TMJ and bracing archives?

Until you understand the causes, and the condition itself, you will never likely do what will get rid of it.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Leigh,

I have very similiar symtoms to the ones you describe, but have been dealing with them for many years. I have the issue with the left side of my face. My symptoms include headaches on the left side of my face and in the back of my head, ear itchiness sometimes, neck stiffness and pain, eye pressure, a cloudy head, and that weird feeling you talked about deep in my jaw. It feels like a slight tingling or tightness way back by my back teeth. For years I have thought I had blocked sinuses on the left side. I tried all sorts of decongestants and sprays, which didn't help. Within the last 1.5 years I have had two MRI's which two separate ENT specialists said my sinuses are perfectly normal. The 2nd doctor suggested i see a TMJ specialist, which I haven't done yet, as I was a frequent teeth grinder as a kid. I have had to take a different approach since what I thought was the problem (sinuses) doesn't appear to be the case. I recently found this website and have done a lot of reading about TMJ and skilled relaxation. I started doing the SR about 2 weeks ago, along with a lot of neck stretching. They both have helped me significantly so far, especially the frequent neck stretching. I am beginning to think all my symptoms have been a product of years of bracing, and am just now starting to undue all the consequences of it. Hope this helps.
