I got fungus under my acrylic nails. I was told two things.
1. My beautician buffed off my nails told me it would be alright and put new nails over the top.
2. The beauty supply store told me not to put new nails on and to teat it with Fung Off, by no lift nails inc. She said if you put new nails on top and don't treat it , you could actually lose your nails. Is this true?
I've had acrylic nails for two years and this is my first problem with fungus. What causes it, will it happen again?
What is your suggestion and comments?

Dear Nedra,
Nails need to be as dry as possible. Keeping them damp invites fungi. Acrylic nails smother nails & keep them moist.
Your beauty store operator knows what she is talking about, your beautician does not.
Once you let your nails exposed to the air, I would suggest using the vinegar approach mentioned in the FAQ page of this 'site. Till this is solved, I would even avoid nail polish.
Once it is, I would be VERY conservative with acrylics AND polish.

Acrylic Nail Fungus can be cured and an atificial nail can be place back over the infected area as long as it has not been left unnoticed, in other words light in color. This does not take care of the problem. Fungus needs to continuely be treated w/a fungal treatment. I highly recomend that those wearing acrylic nails make sure that the proper technique of applying and filling in is used. I as a nail tech was taught after buffing lightly over natural nail w/nail file to apply a disinfective, followed by a anti Nail Fungal followed by a Primer and in between each treament should have time to dry. Then the acrylic can be applied. During your time of fill ins the entire nail should be buffed down and the same technique should be reapplied. Nail Shops have become a horror story for our industry. It is ashame that State Board has done nothing about the Nail Bars that are offering $15 - $20 full sets! There is no way that any business can be purchasing the proper use of acrylic nail application at that cost. The Public needs to be aware of the improper acrylic nail shops using cheap (MMA - methyl methacrylate) unapproved monimers with no form of health safety prevention of Nail Fungus before they apply that stuff. I believe the public needs to start law suites towards these paticular nail technicians that need to go back to school or for that matter to school at all.
