Varicose veins occur when the valves become incompetent and so the "standpipe" effect dilates the veins and further damages more valves. Pregnancy tends to increase this condition since the pressure on the veinous return in the pelvis, along with the increased blood flow to the pregnancy, puts a greater strain on this system.

Overweight, tight jeans and garters tend to worsen this condition for obvious reasons.
