dilating leg/feet veins

Posted by worried on January 11, 2003 at 04:40:27:

i am a 46 yr. old woman that has dilating veins of all sorts
(spider, varicose, and what sounds like reticular veins) on both legs and feet. This has been going on for a few years now. A vascular surgeoon did tests and said that i have some leakage behind knees and one area in thigh. i am really worried about where this could lead since i constantly see these progressing in number and severiiity. i have been wearing the 20/30 compression pantyhose. What do yor think about the compression pantyhose in my case since that are all over my legs and feet, not just the lower areas? Does my situation sound more uncommon? What affect could this have on my health and length of life?

Hi, Worried.

Since you have read the archives you know that compression only works if it is applied to below the knees--even if there are veins needing support above the knees. Your compression pantyhose is contributing to the problem.

The Shute brothers in Canada have had success with this kind of problem with taking at least 800 units of natural vitamin E a day (mixed tocopherols) and you might try that for a year or so. I am sure that your library could find you a book by the Shute brothers about vitamin E.

You should keep asking your doc since he can tell you when surgery would be indicated.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Dr. Stoll, thank you so much for your time and quick response as i feel that i had not had as much info. as i could use. The compression pantyhose seem to slow down the progression of this situation on the upper parts of my legs too, is this possible? or what effect is it having? I want to understand what is going on in this situation as i feel this gives me an advantage as to handling it properly. So give me all the details you can. From what I have described does it appear to you that I will eventually have to have surgery? Is so, because the deep system would need repair or what? Do you think this could eventually affect my health? What about the length of my life?

Thanks, Worried.

Statistically, the pantyhose are making the veins above your knees worse along with the ones below. It makes no logical sense to me either but those are the statistics.

Aurgery? Probably, although I would have to examine you to have a valid opinion. Any competent physician can do these kind of examinations in their office in a few minutes.

Dr. Stoll, how does compression therapy work and what does it do?

Hi, Worried.

Direct compression just flattens the vein and forces the blood flow to the deep veins. No explanation was given in the large study that observed the improvements to the AK (above knee) veins with pressure therapy BK.

It makes no sense to me either but that is what was observed.

Hope this helps.

Dr. Stoll, your comments greatly beneficial to me. Thanks, again! One more question for now. Are you saying the study revealed BK more beneficial than pantyhose for BOTH the SUPERFICIAL VEINS and deep system above the knee? Sorry for getting so technical-but, that helps me the most. THANKS A MILLION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. Stoll, i have now been wearing only BK compression hose for 3 weeks and there is definitely a increase in many veins visible that were not visible before, veins that are puffier than they were and more knotty looking places on veins and I'm sure this is NOT my imagination. What is going on? i sure would have hoped that i would never had this many dilated veins. it looks as though all of the veins on the surface of my legs and feet will dilate. What does this sound like. Is this unusual that is going on? Threating to my health and/or life sooner or later? I know that I'm not where you can examine the situation, but, if you can please answer me the best you can as I haven't found a doctor I have the confidence i need in. i know that as we age skin becomes thinner and i assume less supportive and i know many people get some vein changes, but
what would be considered more than normal for my age? My main concern is living a long healthy like for my family. Do you think i could have any real threat to that desire? Again i know you are not where you can examine this situation, but please help me as much as you can.

Thanks, Worried.

These veins were there before, they were just compressed by the elastic.

Now, I guess I will have to ask you if you are more interested in how your legs look or in dealing with the causes.

For you to notice this much difference means to me that you need surgical stripping of the damaged veins.

Let us know what you do.

Walt
