I've read something in your archives that pantyhose make more problems for varicose veins. Do you know why this happens? I've been wearing panty hose that my doctor has instructed me to wear and they seem to be getting worse. I don't think I can wear the ones that go below the knees because i have varicose veins that start at my thigh and run along side of my knees going down to my ankle, I think the stockings below the knee will put presure on my varicose that I already have. I need a little advice on what to do. Thanks!
Kay

hello Kay - I don't think Pantyhose do anything for your aching legs besides hide the veins!! You would need true support hose from a medical supply store, or a doctor specializing in Varicose veins orders them for you.....I wore heavy guage hose for almost 10 years, and I did not notice much difference with them off or on.....maybe someone else will post on the subject.

varicose veins and 20-30 pantyhose

Thanks Jayne,

The pantyhose that I'm wearing are Medi 20-30 compression perscribed by my doctor, but I really don't know if it's helping me any or just making my legs worse. Though, I did read something in the archives that says to wear support stockings below the knees. I have problems from my thigh straight down to my ankle, not sure if anything below the knee would be doing me any good (I think it would be putting presure on my varicose vein, by the knee area). What kind of hose are you wearing now and are do they seem to be helping you any?
Thanks again for you kind help!

Jayne, why did you wear them for 10 years if you notticed no difference, was there any benefit in wearing them?

Hi,Kay.

Compression is how support hose work! ANY compression above the knee will make the veins below the knee worse. Veins above the knee will not be helped by compression.

So long as the deep veins are not involved, surgical removal of the superficial veins is the best approach since they will grow back normal so long as you avoid the known factors that cause them: pregnancy, over weight, smoking, sedentary occupation without precautions, etc.

Hello Kay - I wore at least 20 compression, full length chaps style. Glad to see Dr. Stoll's post,,,,as when I went for acupuncture for other things, the acupunturist said best to not wear the hose....

question regarding pantyhose for varicose

Thanks Dr. Walt,
Do you know why my Vascular Surgeon would perscribe me these pantyhose 20-30 compression? I'm confused as to why he never told me this, he stated to me that I should always have full compression on the veins that are sticking out. What you're saying makes total sense me, but what will happen to the veins above my knees, do you think it will make them come out more? Thanks again!

Jayne do you still wear any type...

Hi Jayne,

Thank you so much for you kind help! Do you still wear any type of support, like knee highs? Dr. Stoll stated that I should wear the knee highs...if you are how are they working for you? Did the 20 compression, full length chaps style seem to cause you any additional problems?

Hi M.T.
Sorry I'm asking so many questions...I really don't have anyone else to talk to that knows what I'm going through.
Do you wear any support hose on your legs now? If you do, do they seem to be helping any? I just ordered knee highs 20-30 compression, I'm hoping they will do some good. The bad thing is that I'm really young and I want to have a baby next year, they say to wear support hose then too. Don't know what to do then either. Any other suggestions on that.

Hi Jayne,
Thanks for your information!! See that's why I'm confused, I also am having problems with veins, they start from my thigh and go straight down to my ankle. My doctor says to wear the pantyhose to give me compression on the veins. I've just read on a couple of sites that if you have veins above the knee, that knee highs won't help those veins, only the veins below the knee. I really have to decide on what to do. Dr. Stoll says that stokings make problems below the knee, which also makes sense to me and that I should wear the knee highs so I don't make problems below the knee. Thanks

Hi, Kay! You sound like you are asking all the questions I have been asking. I am wearing 20/30 compression knee-hi only now and think that is what I should stick with. I wore pantyhose compression ones for several years and was tortured wearing them. I don't think band on top of medical type compression hose should be binding like regular knee-hi hose that bind and can affect circulation and none of us should be wearing. I am curious to see the sites where you found they back up what Dr. Stoll has said about above the knee hose should not be worn...if you still have those sites I would love to check them out. But, I'm convinced that I won't go back to pantyhose type-don't believe they did any good-veins go worse anyway. But, I thought my veins were bad enough and didn't want to take a chance so I also wore pantyhose type like Dr. said. Actually it may only be theory that compression hose help the veins from progressing even with knee-high ones. But, I figure I will at least support the veins in my calves and maybe keep them from progressing as fast. Let me hear from you on those sites if you still have them. Thanks! Maybe Dr. Stoll will see this post and let us know if there have been studies that show that compression hose slow progression and/or they actually help circulation???

Hi, Kay.

The problem is that it is counterintuitive. Even though a massive study, done about 30 years ago with venograms, etc., showing that support that goes past the knee causes more problems than it helps, this study was basically ignored and "docs" continued to recommend what they thought should be the way things "should" work.

This "Tolstoy Effect" is still one of the most powerful against innovation in medicine especially in things in which the old accepted way is not working at all.

He will say that he has never seen the study and will say that he is much boo busy to ask the library to do a search for him (a few minutes at most). Actually, coming face to face with the contradictory nature of "his way" would be intensely uncomfortable to him as well as embarrasing. Do not hold your breath!

Hi, MT.

It is just intuitive that compression hose should help prevent the progression of VVs. The only really big and well done study I have seen showed that they actually caused more harm than good ESPECIALLY if they went above the knee. Apparently, like many things we allopaths take as gospel, there is no data supporting their use.

The federal office of the budget has said for years that fully 89% of what physicians do as "standard of practice" have not been proven by any reliable criterion. Perhaps that is why every few years basic approaches are found to be actually harmful rather than helpful. Only a heavily lobbied monopoly could get away with something this blatant!

Whatever happened to Hippocrates' primary admonition: "First do no harm."?

Did the big study conclude that we actually would be better off not even wearing compression hose at all...???that is reallly confusing then as what to do?

No, MT.

The study said that support up to just below the crease of the knee, with properly fitted stockings, was beneficial but that anything that went above that point was contraproductive.

Hi Jayne and M.T.
I just found another site that states a little something about not wearing anything past the knee. Exactly what Dr. Stoll stated...not sure if you wanted to check it out.
When you go on the site look under: Self-Care Tips to Relieve and Prevent Varicose Veins...Let me know what you think. Hope this helps a little.
