Dr. Stoll
I have had 2 small varicose veins since childhood, however when I had my daughter my veins became much worse. I have had sclerotherapy treaments about once a year (1-2 sessions) for the past 3 years. My problem is my last session was in April and since then my leg looks worse now than it did before the treatments. There are also some varicose veins around my ankle and alot of spider veins on my foot (neither of which was there before. All of these new veins have appeared in the last 5 months. My biggest problem is what to do about it. When I had the scerotherapy done I paid cash because I had no insurance and because it for cosmetic purposes. Well now my insurance won't even let me have any test done until May of 2000 because it is a preexcisting condition. I am scared now because it is gotten so bad in such a short period of time. I am also noticing redness on my foot, and cramping in my foot and leg usually in the evening. Is there anything I can do to help myself until my insurance will pay for tests and treatment? I am around 15 pounds overweight. I just began walking, I am also a smoker. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Tracy,
You will never resolve this condition while you are a smoker--NOR avoid more recurrences. Now, I wonder why your docs never told you that? Could you be their personal annuity (grim grin)?
By the way, laser therpy is a better way of dealing with the varicosities that sclerotherapy used to be used for.

Hi Dr. Stoll,
I just thought I'd use this opportunity to ask about the horse chestnut extract. It's been strongly recommended for some time now. Would appreciate your thoughts on this.
Thanks!

Hi, Rosemarie.
This is a new one on me. I would be interested in anyone's experience with this.

Dear Walt,
My sweetie has varicose veins and had purple ankles and feet, one leg the veins were almost black looking. He started using the horse chestnut product about one year ago which we found through Life Extension Foundation that included other ingredients as well. The LEF researched product works quite well. He has been able to sleep, walk all day without achy legs, the color of one foot is now normal (was purple) and the other foot that was black has a few spotty light purple patches. He is taking 2 capsuls a day, and contemplates taking 3 but probably won't (one gets tired of swallowing pills when one feels good). He is 6'6" tall, and his tall parents also suffered from these varicose veins. You can find a very good article in the Life Extension Foundation Magazine, it is archived at the lef.org web site. Take a look around that web site. Walt, also take a look at the diabetes protocol under "disease therapies" and see what you think. KarenB

Hi Karen,
I'm glad you had that very informative article handy for Dr. Stoll and everyone else, because I got my info from books and catalogs, etc.
However, contrary to what the article says, this product has been available here in the US for several years. In fact you can go to any healthfood store and they should have it. Like always, I've been getting mine at Wal-Mart where it's called "Vein Guard". Also Vitaminshoppe.com has it. It's really everywhere and 60 tablets standardized to 18% in a 300mg tablet costs around $6 at both places. So it's really quite affordable. I've been using mine more as prevention, so I wasn't aware how effective it really was.
Thanks for responding to this. I hope this helps a lot of people and would also love to hear other testamonials.
All the best
Rosemarie
