VARICOSE VEINS/STOCKING QUESTION...

Posted by gale [1020.1195] on June 01, 2004 at 08:26:01:

I just had a question about my varicose veins and when I take off my stocking at night. Is it just me or do my varicose veins and other veins show up more after I take off my stockings? Is it because my skin is being pushed in and the veins have to reajust when I take them off? Also, my vascular doctor stated that if I lose weight my varicose veins are going to be much more noticeable, is this true?

Gale,

Overweight CAUSES varicosities. It is true that the varicosities already present will be more noticeable if you lose weight.

If your stockings go above your knees, they are causing more varicosities.

Stockings that go above the knee will cause the varicosities below the knees to get worse faster.

do you have any varicosities above the knee? Also, do you wear your hose the whole day, everyday? I do but before the day is over they can get uncomfortable-wondering if they are a problem for you. Actually, I find them pretty uncomfortable when I put them on and I have been properly fitted for them. I think you said before that you just put them on like regular hose, but I don't seen how you do as tight as they are. Do you have any tips about putting them on or daily wearing that could help me. Do you ever go without them? If you do, do veins seem to get worse? I know I have lots of questions, but if you have answers I certaily will appreciate them. Thanks again!

what kind of shoes do you wear with the stockings-to me alot of shoes feel tight with these hose on because of their extra thickness, and also backless shoes don't look right with the reinforced hill? Also, do your hose actually feel comfortable? If so, I need all the tips you have.

do you think superficial varicose veins will worsen faster without the compression hose of are they strictly a comfort thing? The reason I'm asking is that I find the hose, even properly fitted, to be a less than comfortable thing to wear and wondering just how much if any they do to slow progression of superficial varicosities? I understand that some people find their legs less painful if they wear them, but I just wondering about what if anything they do to slow progression of superficial varicose veins? Also, do you believe that any vitamins, herbs are useful in varicose veins and is so what are they and what can be expected from using them? Acually, what I would like is a new pair of legs.

Hi, J.

In my opinion, they are comfort only. If they bind at the knees they actually make varicosities progress faster.

Hope this helps.

Compression hose are recommended by my doctor for the surface blue varicose veins I have, the ones smaller than varicosed saphenous veins would be, whatever they would be called. And they are especially bad in Left calf. But you do think wearing the compression hose to the knee in my situation is of no benefit? Thank you.

Right, J.

I would never wear them. The main reason they are prescribed, in my opinion, is for the concept of "out of sight, out of mind". If worn below the knee, in my opinion, they at least do no harm and the opacity of the stocking does hide them from view.

I want to ask you one more question: I have superficial veins, a mass of them in calf that looks like they are starting to bulge, actually one does have some bulging, would compression slow the progression of any of these by not allowing blood to fill and stretch the veins or not? I would value your best judgment on this. Thank you.

Personally, I do not think it makes a difference. Are you overweight?

Yes, I could stand to lose some weight. I'm starting to work on that. Would the extra weight be a reason to wear the hose?
