Reticular Veins

Posted by Casey on January 03, 2001 at 11:03:59:

I have over the course of the last month seen an outbreak of reticular and spider veins in my legs. I am overweight and do a lot of driving (2 hours a day in the car). I have several questions. One is whether the vitamin E dose will help diminish the appearance of the existing veins or just prevent new ones? Does wearing support hose help with elminating new veins? I do an low impact step aerobics program and I am wondering if this is also causing them to get worse. If I lose the weight, is there a chance that the appearance of the reticular veins will be diminished? I weigh 210 and am probably 40-50 pounds heavier than I should be at 5'7". Thanks.

Hi, Casey.

It is your sitting in the car for long periods AND your overweight that are the problem not your exercise--even though you will eventually have arthritis in your knees from this type of exercise.

Vitamin E may help prevent more but not so long as you keep up the auto thing without stopping and walking around the car every 10 minutes. They are not likely to get rid of already present ones and laser therapy is the best thing for them.

I hope this helps. Elastic stockings only help if they do not go above the knee AND they are fit properly.

Walt

Thanks for your response Dr. Stoll,

If I could trouble you with a follow up question. Is there any chance that once visible that the appearance of the reticular veins will diminish with weight loss? Also, what is the likely hood that these veins will develop into full blown varicose veins. Any other advice on how to improve leg vein health are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you for answering my question. If I could ask just one think further. Is there any chance these veins will become full blown varicose veins? Is there any chance that with weight loss the vein appearance will diminish? I will work on the driving less. Any advice on leg vein health would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Casey.

The only thing I know are losing weight, not sitting for long periods of time, and high doses of vitamin E.

Reticular varicosities are not very likely to progress to full blown varicosities although the very things I listed above are also those things that would cause them.

Walt
