varicose veins

Posted by susan on January 26, 2001 at 19:04:21:

Dear Dr Stoll,
I've read some of your correspondence on this web page, however I need to speak to you myself. I am a 39 yr old woman. I've been an x-ray tech for 10 years now and had my first indication of a varicose vein back in '93 medially on my calf. Mine are the larger veins wrmy looking; not to prominent. By 1997 I had a cluster in my groin, a group posteriorly an my calf. My doctor recommended a saphenous stripping. Had that (now I have nerve damage), and the veins have continued to spread above my knee anteriorly. I went to see a vascular surgeon recently and she said to have scleropathy therapy. My pcp says that if you remove the varicosed veins that your other veins become stressed under the added volume. The surgeon says to keep that veins spreads them. My quality of life is deteriorating as a result of my legs, (developing a cluster on left leg in posterior calf). I am a very high energy person who walks, exercises and weight trains regularly. I have never been over weight. NO ONE in my family has had these horrible things. I take pycnogignol however not regularly, also I take horse chestnut agian not regularly. I try to keep my legs up as much as possible, but thats not always possible. I now wear sigvaris support hose (knee high and mid thigh lengths). I hate wearing them an don't know what I'll do this summer in the heat wearing shorts!!!! My vascular surgeon has told me to stop shaving and has perscribed nuerontin for the nerve trauma. When i shave my sense of feel on my leg is highly sensitized a cool tingly type feeling especially over the veins. Please tell me what you think which physician do you agree with. What can I do to stop this terrible process. Please help me!!!!

Susan from NH

Hi, Susan.

GET RID OF THE MID THIGH STOCKINGS!!!

A large study, including functional venograms, more than 30 years ago, showed that stockings that go above the knees actually make the entire problem worse! Your surgeon should know that!

Your surgeon is right in that the damaged veins, left in place, actually tend to spawn new ones. Sclerotherapy is not very good for anything larger than a couple of millimeters.

Your legs will grow new veins that are young and healthy if you have the old ones removed. However, remember that the surgery does nothing about your genetic susceptibility to this problem which you HAVE TO HAVE for to have this problem with your lifestyle.

Do you know if your "deep veins" are involved?

I would suggest you take at least 1000 units of natural vitamin E a day to help prevent new ones (Reference: Shute Brother's research for the past 50 years.)

Let us know how you do.

Walt
