Dr Stoll,
I just read your other post where you told someone they had a stasis ulcer. I looked this up on the internet and saw pictures of it. This is exactly what my boyfriend has all the time. It gives him so much pain and it takes forever to heal. He has very bad vericous veins but he has been told by doctors that they can do nothing about his veins because he has wine spots on his legs. I guess they are also called wine spots in english. They look like big red birthmark all over his legs. Anyway, that's the reason they tell him they cant operate on his legs. Is this true or is this an outdated view? If it is true and they really can't operate on his legs because of these spots...what works best for healing these ulcers. He's done everything from topical antibiotics to oral antibiotics and special cremes. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi, Barbara.
As with all chronic conditions, the causes must be addressed before any treatment will be successful.
The resolution to this condition depends on whether his deep veins are involved. There are 2 systems of veins in the legs--the superficial, which can be seen and the deep that can only be tested by a knowledgable physician (simple 2 minute test in his office). SO, ask him what he has been told. If he has not been told, he needs a better doc.
Once you find this out, let us know.
In the meantime see my note within the past 2 days about this since temporary healing can be accomplished by an "Unna Boot" or the like.

Well from what he's told me, no one will do anything about his veins because of the wine spots. It seems to me that in today's age of technology, that something could be done even with the wine spots. About finding a better doc...you don't have much choice with socialized medicine. All the doctors are full and even threatened to go out on strike in protest against the governments lack of concern over the shortage of family doctors. I'll check out the info on the unna boot. Thanks!

Hi, Barbara.
I guess I do not understand. One of the indications FOR varicose surgery IS skin changes.
The wound care number is (800) 649-6863. Perhaps they could give you information over the phone. He does not yet have the actuasl ulcers but, from your description, he eventually will. The time to keep that from happening is BEFORE it happens.
