Vericose veins

I have a genetic predisposition to getting vericose veins (My mother developed a hardened mass of vericose veins during her second pregnancy located on the back of her right knee: and my great grandmother, still living, has had problems with the swelling of her legs). I also hae been diagnosed with hypotension which causes me to have fainting spells.
I read an article in a women's health magazine which stated that there is a higher risk of getting spider veins and vericose veins while a person is taking an oral contraceptive pill. I just began taking the pill this last year, and already I am noticing an increase of spider veins on my legs. Is there any scientific evidence supporting this claim? If so, what would be your suggestion to prevent further spider veins and/or vericose veins? Discontinue my pescription? Are there any excercises that could increase circulation or vein strength in my legs? I would appreciate any suggestions you may have. Also, is there a way to prevent vericose veins during pregnancy, to avoid what my mother went through?

Hi Jaymee. I am FAR from an expert on this topic but one thing I know that works very well for vericose veins is grapeseed extract. You would need to take about 300mg per day (100mg 3x a daily). It strengthens capilary walls and is more powerful than vitamin C as an antioxidant. You may also befefit from a Multi Antioxidant.

I am sure there is a bigger picture involved here. There usually is. However, this appears to be a good solution and I have seen it work. Grapeseed Extract is a little pricty and you would most likely need to take it for at least 6 months. Use a prodcut from a well-known company. I wish I had more answers for you. I'm sure others will have more information. Take care

Hi, Jaymee.

The doc who prescribed your BC pills knows that they increase the potential for varicosities AND, more dangerously, the clots that tend to form in varicosities. Read your package insert.

Of course, one pregnancy would be a much greater risk of both than years of BC pills.

The best exercises are rebounding AND underwater exercises.

I wouldn't recommend taking B. C. pills. I was on them for
a year and also noticed I was getting more spider veins. (I
began getting varicose veins during my 3rd pregnancy). I
also began getting high blood pressure while I was on the
Pill. If you know when you ovulate and you are very careful
not to have sex around that time, you can prevent getting
pregnant. My varicose veins are very painful, especially
around my period. I've tried grapeseed extract and horse
chestnut for long periods and neither one has worked for me
(altho I still continue to take them). What has helped is
working out with weights (strengthening all my leg muscles +
calf raises). I have been pain free for 2 months now. I
also picked up something new from my HFS yesterday that I'm
going to try: "Cool Cayenne with Butcher's Broom" by
Solaray. I've heard great things about cayenne from Vince
F. and others on this board. It's supposed to help with
circulation, among other things.

I wish I had a trampoline.

Let us know how you do and what works for
