For Dr. Stoll: Adrenal testing

Posted by Hypothyroid on November 17, 2003 at 11:07:23:

Hi Dr. Stoll,

I realize that faithful practice of SR will eventually restore/regenerate my adrenals and alleviate the stored stress effect in the hypothalamus.

For the past 13 mos. I've been faithfully practicing the three-legged stool: (1) SR in the form of Centerpointe with all kinds of remarkable results! (decreased stress, increased tolerance to stress, deeper sleeping, more positive outlook, increased function of left hand, etc.) (2) WFD, which has improved my bowel problems tremendously; and (3) Exercise in the form of walking daily.

However, I still have several of the signs of adrenal maladadptive syndrome: severe PMS, carb cravings, salt cravings, mood changes, strange/upsetting dreams, decreased ability to concentrate (the aforementioned are all intermittent and become worse before and in the beginning of my period), and abdominal fat. I've been on natural thyroid replacement (switched from Synthroid when I changed from being under the care of an M.D. to an N.D.), but I read an article which states that no doctor should put a hypothyroid patient on thyroid replacement therapy without first checking the adrenals. Mine have never been checked.

Do you think my situation warrants adrenal testing? If so, which method or test is the best? ACTH is mentioned in the archives -- is this the method you endorse?

As always, I like to be armed with knowledge *before* going to the naturopath. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Aerobic exercise is really important for adrenals. Walking will not be enough. Try to choose something you enjoy doing.
Also, are you getting enough sleep? SLeep is essential for restoring adrenal function. Try to find time for both, and you might improve. A good book on adrenal fatigue is Adrenal fatigue

Thanks, Hypothyroid.

There is little doubt that any adrenal testing would show a problem. Adrenal regeneration takes the longest of any other thing. You will still be regenerating 2 years from now. Keep on keeping on and do not stop learning.

Listen to S. I agree about the aerobics. You may not have been able to do it in the beginning but you have progressed a lot since then. Now may be the time to make that next step.

You have had too many positive results to not know you are on the right track.

Walt
