Dr. Stoll,

About 10 years ago when moving into my house someone stepped on my left big toe while carrying an entertainment center and I ended up with a hematoma. It was kind of a thin strip of blood, didn't hurt, and so I didn't see the need to have it drained. Eventually the nail grew out and the blood naturally drained. I had a persistent slight "dip" in the arc of my nail where the nail appeared to come away from the bed, but that was about it.

Over the years that "dip" in the nail has slowly moved farther back to a point now where the last 1/3 of the nail can't seem to stay attached to the bed. The nail and bed has also thickened.

Afraid I was goint to lose the whole nail, I saw a podiatrist who thought it might be fungus. He ground down much of the nail to take a good look and had me do 1 treatment of vinegar daily and said to come back in 2 months. I did and there was really no improvement to the nail and he recommended removing it even though the nail is still fine in the back 2/3. I was MORTIFED. He offered to biopsy it, but even if it was fungus he said there might only be a 10% chance of saving the nail. I'm lost as to what to do.

I am convinced there is still very viable nail bed there and want to know what I should do to give my nail the best shot at recovery. Years ago I had extraordinarily strong nails while taking flax seed so I am considering that again. Any advice is welcome. I can send pics, whatever.

Thanks for this site!
