Thanks, Jan. I'm still not sure what yellow lentils are--went to the HFS today and they weren't sure either. The clerk asked if I'd tried chana dal (dhal?), which I had not. They are yellow and split, like peas, but she thought they were a kind of garbanzo bean. They also had split mung beans, which are kind of yellowish, so I ended up buying both. Hopefully both will cook up softly without soaking.
I wish I had asked about yellow lentils when we went to a Tibetan restaurant while traveling this fall. We had a delicious dal soup that was exactly the color and consistency I'm trying achieve. Hopefully I've found the right stuff.
