Thank you, Chandu. I finally figured out that toor dal is indeed what I want.

We don't have any Indian grocery stores here in our smallish town (closest is probably 80 miles or more), but there is an Indian restaurant, so I will ask there if they sell it.

The chana dal I bought looks just like the pictures I found online of yellow lentils, so maybe it was mis-identified.
