Consider a Black Berkey
It is NSF certified to remove heavy metals, microbes, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and chlorine. It leaves beneficial minerals in the water.
It is gravity operated, so adds nothing to your power bill. You can use it in power outages.
There is an add-on for about $60 that removes most of the fluoride.
Initial cost is about $250 including cartridges (for the 2-cartridge model). After the initial investment, the cost is reasonable (IMO). For a household of two (for drinking water and kitchen use) for the 2-cartridge model it's about $50 a year, changing the cartridges every 2 years. The black cartridges are better than the white ceramic ones (remove more junk from the water).
An extra expense would be changing the fluoride filter every year or two.
